This year we are doing Christmas a little differently, but still the same chaos and laughter we’ve come to love.
When I watched as Mom brought in her 15 bins of ornaments I only had one thought: “This is totally normal for everyone,” while I may have just been reassuring myself that we are not crazy for having this many decorations, I couldn’t help but feel pride as I knew my mom will make our hose look like a Christmas store threw up in it. I helped Mom and Emerald set up, and decorate the tree on November 11, then that weekend Mom put up all her garland around the hallways and windows, then all her other embellishments to the house, such as the light fixture in the dining room( which always looks amazing), and a giant gingerbread men cookie cutter in the stairwell. And it seems to me that, while I had only helped put up very few decorations, and we still have another tree to put up, my mom will do all of this with no compliant because of her love for decorating and Christmas.
Once the decorating was done, the baking started! Mom kicked of the holidays with butter tarts, toffee tarts, and nuts and bolts,( which me, and anyone who knows us well, fully knows that she’s not even close to being done baking). I watched as my Mom worked in the kitchen one day making bread and scones, and I couldn’t help but notice that, while she was quite busy this week, she still took the time to make these simple, yet delicious representatives of how much effort she puts into one holiday.
Next on our list of Christmas events in our house is that we will are going to a holiday train! I’m not too sure what that is, but when Mom presents an idea for the holidays, like going to sun peaks last year, I’m always open minded because usually we all end up having fun as a family, whether we go to an even, or just watching a movie together, or even playing charades. Charades is always a great time in our house, we are usually up on Christmas Eve till 1 am laughing and having a great time.
So far this holiday seems to be a special one, one that comes from the heart, and one to cherish. So this year I’m excepting to have an amazing time being surrounded by family and friends, and over all just happy to be together.
